IMF's luck just run out

“Sixty years ago, Donald Horne said we were the lucky country,” he said.

“That was a myth. Unfortunately, the myth has now passed its use by date.”

He went on to say Australia was “on borrowed time”.

“I still hear Australians consoling themselves with the view that we punch above our weight,” he said.

“The truth is it’s a long, long time since we did, and in fact, I doubt that that was ever really the case.”

Dr Rudd laid out seven sectors that he said were not only crucial to Australia’s economic success, but to safeguarding national security.

They included artificial intelligence, biotechnology, energy, critical minerals, defence industry, auto-making and finance.
