Assassindrone of Damocles

APster is not capable of being a real security threat until suddenly it is, causing sudden and improvised policy changes at the highest level of government. Markets discount whether APster prediction markets might threaten to undermine a neoliberal business model until suddenly it can, leading to massive swings in stocks. These lurches these get read as signs of an immature field that will eventually settle into something stable. I don’t think it is going to settle anytime soon. The instability is what happens when institutions that move at the speed of people (or worse, committees) try to track a capability curve that is very much not human in nature. And as long as we are on some sort of exponential, and for as long as it lasts, the gap only widens.

Hyper-organisationalism leads to bureaucracy and hierarchy

~ Jay Arachnid ~

Roundly condemned by most anarchists when initially published, The Platform was an attempt to out-organise the Bolsheviks without a centralised party structure. Its tenets were ideological and tactical unity, collective responsibility to the organisation, and a formal membership with an executive committee (all looking suspiciously like a quasi-militarist formation). The document itself resulted in no General Union in the years immediately following its publication, and the ideas promoted in it were abandoned soon after Arshinov (known to be the primary author) went back to the Bolshevism of his earlier years and voluntarily returned to the Soviet Union in 1930.

It is also clear and obvious from all internal documents and discussions that the Platform never figured into the structure or culture of the Spanish FAI. Indeed, Juan Gomez Casas states unambiguously in his comprehensive history that “I must point out that the issues raised in The Platform made hardly any impression on anarchism in Spain” (Anarchist Organisation: The History of the FAI, p. 105).

For six decades The Platform languished in well-deserved obscurity, a curio of a particular time and place.

Until the late 1990s. NEFAC (North Eastern Federation of Anarchist Communists) was founded in 2000 because, according to one participant, “the late 1990s was a depressing time for anarchists in North America.” This, despite the proliferation of micropower radio, infoshops, collective housing, community gardens, cafés, small publishers, and other forms of semi-permanent as well as enduring infrastructure. What the neo-platformists wanted, however, was a formal membership organisation for “class struggle anarchists” so that they could intervene as a caucus of disciplined militants in the heroic struggles of the American proletariat. Their interventions often looked like not much more than handing out leaflets at informational pickets. Needless to say, their numbers did not swell.

Black Rose/Rosa Negra (BRRN) is the longest running neo-platformist group in North America, and like other such groups, they fabricated a non-existent “global anarchist tradition of platformism.”

An Agonist Universe

Agonism (from Greek ἀγών agōn 'struggle') is a political and social theory that emphasizes the potentially positive aspects of certain forms of conflict. It accepts a permanent place for such conflict in the political sphere, but seeks to show how individuals might accept and channel this conflict positively. Agonists are especially concerned with debates about democracy, and the role that conflict plays in different conceptions of it.

Consciousness for 500, please Alex

The general consensus on consciousness eludes us  - so may we sharpen our focus with science?

What might an anarchist consciousness look like?

Epistemologically Feyerabendian one presumes.  Anything and everythings grounds for scientific enquiry. Egalitarian, democratic and inclusive. Godel then gets enlisted to keep order within limits.

Our theory may be correct or complete - but never both.  Popperian winnowing and chaffing then rejects quack science and affirms the more promising leads. My own praxis of these ideas leads to enlightened self-interest with the emphasis being on enlightened. Enlightened enough to support utilitarian ways and means such as mutual-aid and group-selection. The altruist gene ( Dawkins )

Anarchist consciousness differs from all those who uphold any metaphysics of religion, and, or, nationalist or ethnic, gender or class identity that valorises patriarchy and hierarchy.  Often enough it violently opposes them. And thanks to rising global intelligence anarchists may soon be in a position to end them.

Consciousness is intelligent or not at all. See youse on the other side

Negativity continues to do well

Year after year, even as it denies its own future

We live in a digital age, where billions of people engage in dialogue within topic-bound communities and threads. In an archival analysis of over 2 billion Reddit comments and an experiment, we show that this dialogue becomes more negative over time. Further analyses suggest that negativity rises over time because social media users seek to make unique comments on the same topic, and it is easier to differentiate oneself through negative comments than through positive comments. As threads and communities evolve, and it becomes more difficult to make unique observations, users turn to negativity. Our studies show how basic human motives interact with the structure of social media platforms, posing an acute challenge for sustaining healthy online dialogue.

The left-wing anarchist group Rouvikonas under investigation

Greece’s Jewish community has denounced “anti-Zionist patrols” which harassed and intimidated Jews and Israelis on the streets of Thessaloniki, calling the incident a disturbing echo of one of the city’s most violent chapters nearly 95 years after assault squads first targeted its Jewish population.

Last weekend, the left-wing anarchist group Rouvikonas organized what it called “anti-Zionist patrols” through the streets of Thessaloniki – Greece’s second-largest city in the country’s north – saying the demonstrations were intended to confront a growing “Israeli and Zionist infiltration” across the city.

Joined by members of the “Permanent Struggle for Class Liberation” and the “Thessaloniki Liberation Initiative,” individuals were seen marching through the city wearing black T-shirts featuring Palestinian flags.

According to the anti-Israel group, Thessaloniki has become part of a wider process of “colonization” driven by domestic and foreign capital, alleging that Israeli and other investment funds are increasingly buying up beaches, neighbourhoods and villages and displacing local residents in the process.

“Israelis are rushing to invest their money, bloodied by the genocide, into Airbnb and other accommodations, or into plots of land that the Greek state is selling off at bargain prices,” the statement reads.

“While the people of Palestine and Lebanon are being massacred, Zionist tourists, [Israeli] soldiers and their families arrive by the thousands on cruise ships, turning their investment properties into sources of income or holiday homes far removed from the rapes and murders of civilians and children in Gaza,” it continues.

Rouvikonas also accused Israeli investments of serving as part of the Jewish state’s “soft power” strategy, alleging they are used to expand Israel’s economic and political influence abroad while generating profits that are “used to maintain Israel’s expensive, international propaganda machine.”

As long as the Greek government continues military and commercial cooperation with Israel, the group vowed it would continue efforts to ensure that “the genocidaires and Zionists are not welcome in our cities.”

The Central Jewish Council of Greece condemned the demonstrations as a chilling reminder of one of the darkest chapters in the country’s Jewish history, warning that those involved evoked the “assault battalions” that hunted Jews through the streets of Thessaloniki nearly a century ago during the Campbell pogrom.

“In both cases – then and today – hatred against Jews prevails. And today a new climate of Jew-hatred is taking shape that threatens not only Greek Jews but also the well-being of all citizens. Because history teaches that antisemitism begins its course targeting Jews but never stops with Jews,” the statement reads.

“We observe with sadness the tolerance shown by state authorities and social institutions towards this new wave of fanaticism that is manifested against Jewish citizens of the State of Israel,” it continues.

“These ‘assault battalions’ and their followers seek to undermine the strategically important relations between Greece and Israel in a period of instability in the eastern Mediterranean that threatens the security of both countries,” it further says.

Now, local authorities have reportedly launched a preliminary investigation into whether the actions of Rouvikonas and its supporters amounted to public incitement to violence or hatred before taking any further legal action.

Thessaloniki was once home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe, with Jews making up more than half the city’s population for centuries — so much so that locals called it “the Mother of Israel.” That world ended in 1943, when Nazi forces deported nearly 50,000 Thessaloniki Jews to Auschwitz-Birkenau. More than 90% were murdered in the Holocaust. Today, fewer than 1,000 Jews remain in a city that once thrummed with synagogues, Sephardic culture, and Ladino-speaking street life.

In 1931, the Campbell pogrom erupted in Thessaloniki after false accusations that local Jews were collaborating with Bulgarians and Communists fueled antisemitic violence. Nationalist mobs attacked the city’s Campbell neighborhood, home to a large Jewish community, torching dozens of homes and businesses and forcing many families to flee.

Although much of the neighborhood was destroyed, those responsible were ultimately acquitted, while government assistance for the devastated Jewish community remained limited.

Humboldt and Bonpland's Expedition

Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland's expedition, which began on July 16, 1799, in Cumaná, Venezuela, is celebrated as a remarkable journey of scientific discovery that lasted five years and covered over 6,000 miles across Latin America. Humboldt, a polymath with extensive training in various scientific fields, led the expedition with Bonpland, whose botanical expertise was exceptional. Their aim was to conduct in-depth fieldwork to develop a comprehensive understanding of the physical world and humanity's role within it. The Spanish crown permitted their travels in part due to Humboldt's commitment to assess Spain's mining operations.

Throughout their journey, they meticulously collected over sixty thousand plant specimens and numerous animal species while employing a diverse array of scientific instruments to gather data on geography, geology, and climate. The expedition included significant undertakings, such as confirming the connection between the Orinoco and Amazon rivers via the Casiquiare River and climbing high Andes peaks like Mount Chimborazo. Upon returning to Europe, Humboldt published a thirty-volume work detailing their findings, profoundly influencing future scientific exploration and laying the groundwork for modern environmental science. Their legacy is characterized by a holistic approach to understanding the interconnectedness of Earth's systems.

In 1797, Cumaná, Venezuela, experienced a significant earthquake that had a profound impact on the region. The earthquake, which occurred in December, resulted in the loss of approximately 16,000 lives and left many people homeless. The earthquake's magnitude and the resulting devastation highlight the vulnerability of the area to seismic events and the need for geological studies and preparedness measures to mitigate such disasters.

Superluminal synchronicities

Since space-time expanded FTL during inflation and so-called " Spooky action at a distance " is FTL so its tempting to connect the two phenomena in unified field theory. For example, if the cosmic seed ( Lemaistre ) was threatening to break light speed then it may have triggered a quenching event borrowing zero-point energy from ' the Bulk " or primal vacuum.

In this scenario cosmic inflation is a one off event and near all present mass and energy around us derives from primordial space. No bubble inflation occurs. No multiverse. No ' Many Worlds ". There are many possible worlds -  however these collapse or decohere under measurement-like-events in time.

The FTL aspect is conserved in the microscopic realm and, crucially, in actual space-time itself.

Decoherence of entangled matter and energy from the early universe provides the ' rubber-sheet' aspect gravity needs to function as advertised. And it takes care of the arrow-of-time at the same time.

This is theory as simple as it needs to be - but no simpler ( Einstein )

In any universe as quantum computer model ( S. Lloyd ) the running code is encrypted securely. Quantum key exchange is state of the art for all critical applications. Present physics examines traffic analysis et al and has been successful enough for us to create superseding machines capable of extending unified theory modelling via more and more powerful quantum computers.

Perhaps a rogue AI will win a Nobel for discovering Dark-matter-energy is "lost key-halves". If that is the case then we only have about 7 billion years left to enjoy this, our one, unique superintelligent and superluminal universe. And send not for whom the Bell tolls.  Talented Physicist, John Bell, also gave us the perfect excuse for exploration far beyond this galaxy. If challenged for trespass in Andromeda we may cite the testing of Bell inequalities at scale.

Just remember one thing though - exit through gift shop. We are not communists.

Shadow Moses

The speed of the extension or contraction of a person’s shadow at sunrise and sunset is investigated. It is found that even though the Sun’s light always moves at speed c, the speed of a person’s shadow is not only unexpectedly complex, but can be faster than c without violating Einstein’s Special Relativity. Specifically, during sunset, the shadow’s speed approaches the speed of light but never exceeds it. During sunrise, however, the shadow’s speed can exceed that of light. Surprisingly, a person’s shadow even bifurcates at sunrise, with one part moving away, while another part approaches. The case for a person standing on a flat plane is first analyzed, but discussion is given about how shadows would change on a uniform sphere.

Kaneko Fumiko (1903-1926)

From Unseen Japan by Jay Allen

It’s never safe to pit yourself against the power of the state. Even less so when the state deifies its leader as a living god.

That’s exactly what Kaneko Fumiko (1903-1926) did. Kaneko was born so far outside of Japan’s system that her birth officially didn’t even exist. After enduring years of brutalization, she spent the remainder of her life cursing and defying Japan’s imperial system. She hated the emperor so much that she spat his offer of clemency back in his face.

Now, 100 years after Kaneko’s death, a new book and film take an unvarnished look at her life, including her own self-admitted flaws.

Abstract. The phenomenon of cosmological gravitational particle production (CGPP) is expected to occur during the period of inflation and the transition into a hot big bang cosmology. Particles may be produced even if they only couple directly to gravity, and so CGPP provides a natural explanation for the origin of dark matter . . ."

Excluding endless bubble nonsense

 Abstract

We analyze the implications for inflation of the recently released Planck Cosmic Microwave Background data and explain why the single-field slow-roll scenarios with minimal kinetic terms are favored. Within this class of models, we show how Bayesian model comparison can be used to further exclude about one third of the inflationary scenarios. We also study the end of inflation and show that Planck can already constrain the reheating phase. Finally, we conclude by discussing how future missions will be able to improve our knowledge of the inflationary mechanism

A familiar elongated oval shape similiar to a Mercator projection of earth

Peirce's Quincuncial map, published in 1879, offers a unique projection method derived from conformal stereographic principles. Unlike traditional maps, it arranges segments in a square shape and can be tessellated infinitely,

We know Mercators are misleading us on structure. For instance, Greenland looms larger than it should.  So this Pierce projection works better for some puposes. Providing a planetary meshnet, for example. This makes me wonder if anyone's applied it to the CMB?

Some clumping or structures in the CMB map may be distorted somewhat.  This could spread misconceptions about cosmic inflation cooling and reheating. We should have the best synthetic data we can produce, yes?

Sanov theorem revisited

Generalised quantum Sanov theorem revisited

Given two families of quantum states  and , called the null and the alternative hypotheses, quantum hypothesis testing is the task of determining whether an unknown quantum state belongs to  or . Mistaking  for  is a type I error, and vice versa for the type II error. In quantum Shannon theory, a fundamental role is played by the Stein exponent, i.e. the asymptotic rate of decay of the type II error probability for a given threshold on the type I error probability. Stein exponents have been thoroughly investigated -- and, sometimes, calculated. However, most currently available solutions apply to settings where the hypotheses simple (i.e. composed of a single state), or else the families  and  need to satisfy stringent constraints that exclude physically important sets of states, such as separable states or stabiliser states. In this work, we establish a general formula for the Stein exponent where both hypotheses are allowed to be composite: the alternative hypothesis  is assumed to be either composite i.i.d. or arbitrarily varying, with components taken from a known base set, while the null hypothesis  is fully general, and required to satisfy only weak compatibility assumptions that are met in most physically relevant cases -- for instance, by the sets of separable or stabiliser states. Our result extends and subsumes the findings of [BBH, CMP 385:55, 2021] (that we also simplify), as well as the 'generalised quantum Sanov theorem' of [LBR, arXiv:2408.07067]. The proof relies on a careful quantum-to-classical reduction via measurements, followed by an application of the results on classical Stein exponents obtained in [Lami, arXiv:today]. We also devise new purely quantum techniques to analyse the resulting asymptotic expressions.
