“Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991, explained it this way back in 1976: “The whole show was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but to take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms.”
Lifelong fan Christopher Watson of ABC News argues, “As 'Star Trek' turns 60, its idealistic vision for the future is more vital than ever.” Accounts of Roddenberry, he writes, “paint a portrait of a more complex, flawed man of sometimes contradictory behaviors and motives.” And yet, “Despite his flaws, he deeply believed we could do better, would do better, and showed us how that might look. That the franchise has survived and thrived as long as it has is testament to how many of us share that vision, and pray humanity might one day get there.”
