If (for Ishmael) “wonderfullest things are ever the unmentionable,” the sea, too, “will permit no records.” The whales it hides are faceless and their brains “incapable of being adequately charted.” Behind, among, between, above these, his “snow-white wrinkled forehead” and whole body “streaked, and spotted, and marbled with the same shrouded hue”—the whiteness that represents “the visible absence of color, and at the same time the concrete of all colors”—Moby Dick himself, from the moment he looms in our narrator’s mind “like a snow hill in the air” to the end point at which his “blank forehead” wipes the Pequod from the map, acts as a giant, roving blind spot, at once the novel’s focal and vanishing point.

The group's code names were derived from characters in Moby Dick, reflecting their revolutionary spirit and the struggle against the state, often referred to as "the machine." The use of Moby Dick as a coding reference point was a testament to the group's failure to achieve internal security and the folly of ' Security through obscurity " .
