We would agree with Sweezy (1979b) that there is a crisis in Marxian Theory, and that this crisis expresses itself in the difficulties and confusions on the part of Marxists regarding the class theoretic specification of socialist societies. We fundamentally disagree, how ever, with Sweezy regarding his alleged "solution" to this crisis. He suggests changing the theory to fit his observations, which cannot be "explained" by the theory. We are arguing, on the other hand, for the internal clarification and extension of the concepts of Marxian science. The "crisis" we see stems from the penetration of Marxism by forms of bourgeois theory such as empiricism and idealism to which Sweezy himself falls prey! In fact, his call for changing the theory to "fit the facts" represents one form of the former type of philosophical position.
