A group of protesters dressed as Gandalf gathered in Palermo Chico, where Peter Thiel lives, to protest the businessman’s arrival in Argentina following his US$76 million investment in Vista Energy.
- The nod to Tolkien
The protesters carried a banner reading “you shall not pass” and sang songs against Palantir, the data intelligence and surveillance company founded by Thiel. The choice of Gandalf alludes to the tycoon’s passion for *The Lord of the Rings*, the saga that inspired the company’s name.
- Criticism of Palantir
Palantir works with agencies such as the U.S. Army, the CIA, and the FBI, and its expansion has raised concerns about mass surveillance. Part of the protest also targeted countries that have contracted its services for defense purposes, including Israel.
- Thiel in Argentina
Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and Facebook’s first major investor, has been in Argentina for months and has increased his investments in the country. In addition to buying shares in Vista, he met with Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada and has stated on several occasions that the Argentine president’s ideas have global relevance.
