No. 3 among Anthropic’s five Economic Futures research priorities is “Modernizing income support for AI-driven displacement.” It includes UI reforms, basic-needs relief after UI is exhausted, and longer-duration unconditional-income pilots.
Taken on its own, this seems to suggest that taxpayers should pay the increased welfare benefits—suitably “reformed”—while Anthropic and its clients retain the private benefits.
Privatized profits. Socialized losses. That infernal alliance. Good old Stiglitz-style public economics points in the opposite direction: tax part of the gains accruing to the winners from labor-displacing AI and use the proceeds to compensate those who bear the displacement costs (Korinek and Stiglitz, 2019). Otherwise, the welfare state subsidizes the technology that creates the need for more welfare.
