Clayton will be joined by FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon CTO Emil Michael, and OPM Director Scott Kupor.
Clayton told the Wall Street Journal the group plans to produce a report within 120 days on AI's risks and opportunities and what role the government should play.
"The risk of not being first is high," Clayton said, pointing in particular to competition with U.S. adversaries.
The move follows Trump's executive order rebranding AI as "super intelligence," as the president prioritizes winning the AI race with China despite mounting safety concerns.
