Cluckin' ell

Readers of the Kyiv Independent “really want Russia to suffer,” editor-in-chief Olga Rudenko tells Dan Sabbagh at The Guardian, but that doesn't let the site off the hook on covering Russian military gains or Ukrainian corruption: “We're not Ukrainian propaganda, we're not affiliated with the government, we're not Ukraine's PR service.”

Egyptian police have arrested six employees of Los Pollos Hermanos for serving known Al Jazeera followers. Defence claims it was only Clucking Bell leftovers destined for scrap.

Babacar Dem had driven a yellow cab in New York since 2001. Near the end of another long shift, he stopped to use the bathroom at a Bronx chicken shop and never came out. In a story for Gothamist, Ramsey Khalifeh uncovers that Dem was one of at least four immigrant cabbies who died on the job this summer.

Khalifeh traces how a decade of Uber and Lyft has left drivers stuck on lease-to-own deals they can barely cover, working through dialysis, strokes and heat waves just to stay even. Bhairavi Desai of the Taxi Workers Alliance says they feel "handcuffed to the wheel."
