Prediction markets, and many of their participants, have roots in cryptocurrency. Polymarket, which is headquartered in New York City, has been a crypto-based exchange since its launch in June 2020. Traders on Polymarket can only buy, sell and receive earnings in the form of a proprietary ‘token’ called Polymarket USD (pUSD), the value of which is backed one-to-one by USDC, a widely used ‘stablecoin’. (A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency pegged to a fiat currency – usually the US dollar.) To withdraw their money, traders must convert the pUSD in their portfolio to a stablecoin, then transfer the funds to a blockchain-based account called a ‘wallet’. Then, if they wish, they can sell the coins for euros or dollars or other currencies on a crypto exchange such as Coinbase.
