If poetry provided OX’s primary content, eros was its motivating method. “Poets should not ‘chase’ an audience; they must ‘attract’ one,” one editorial claims, while a late advertisement proudly declares that “we’ve seduced the best writers and artists in America.” OX wore its libido on its sleeve: The cover of issue 7 (1974) presents a comic cell, drawn by John Wesley, of Dagwood Bumstead smelling a lady’s proffered rear; inside there is “A Journal in Praise of the Art of John Wesley,” written by the artist’s wife, author Hannah Green.
A love-themed issue (no. 14) features artist Hannah Wilke posing as a bare-chested caryatid. There are frequent mentions of flirtation, intrigue, and dalliance throughout, as well as suggestions for games to play: a set of dice pictured on the cover of issue 10, “celebrating 80 years of the aleatory mode,” promises combinations including “we’re / hot,” “you’re / long,” and “soft / cock.” Paul Thek once contributed a drawing of a heart in a slingshot. Let the energy go through you, the caption reads. Readers weren’t so much a market to be cultivated as they were potential lovers, waiting to be struck Cupid-like, invited into a polyamorous relationship.
