NYC Comptroller urges Anthropic to delay its IPO amid growing AI safety concerns

New York City Comptroller Mark Levine urged Anthropic to delay its planned IPO next month, warning that going public would "undoubtedly distract them from the safety work."

  • Speaking to CNBC on Thursday, Levine warned that pressure to deliver profits and growth would "push against" Anthropic's safety work, adding that the city's $325 billion pension funds have "skin in this game" through their index investments.

  • Levine wrote to CEO Dario Amodei on Wednesday seeking details of Anthropic's safety audits, internal controls, and IPO timetable, questioning how the listing plans fit with Amodei's previous calls to slow AI development.

  • He also criticized the voluntary AI safety agreement signed with President Trump last month, saying it doesn't "meet the moment."
