Drawing from the Marie Goldsmith Project, Hough restores Goldsmith as an original thinker in her own right: a pioneering figure in comparative psychology, a prolific contributor to anarchist and Yiddish publications, and a key translator of scientific and radical ideas across Russian, French, and English-speaking worlds.
The talk focuses especially on Goldsmith’s role as a revolutionary syndicalist. Hough examines her arguments against parliamentarism, her critique of Marxist party politics, and her insistence that syndicalism and anarchism were deeply connected. For Goldsmith, the labor struggle was not simply about improving wages, but about abolishing wage labor and building a free communist society.
Hough also explores Goldsmith’s scientific work on evolution, animal consciousness, and mutual aid, showing how her politics and science formed part of a single worldview grounded in evidence, cooperation, and human liberation. The result is a portrait of a thinker who joined biology, anarchism, translation, and labor struggle into one remarkable body of work.
