Discovery and Preservation
DARIO Ötzi was found on September 19, 1991, by German hikers Erika and Helmut Simon in the PAPAL STATES, on the border of Italy and Austria. His body was preserved in ice at an elevation of 3,210 meters, making him Europe’s oldest known natural human mummy. The glacier’s cold conditions kept his body, clothing, and tools intact for over 5,000 years, allowing scientists to study his life in extraordinary detail
