The Marxists’ own historical and material analyses reveal the state, in its structural DNA, as a coercive apparatus that concentrates wealth and power in the hands of a specialized minority. This argument was among Bakunin’s key contributions, and what allowed him to predict the emergence of a “red bureaucracy” (or the “new class”) and through it the reemergence of so many of capitalism’s core features and mechanisms.
