Holding other people's coins is unlimited liability. Every hack, every fake government request, every regulator in every country lands on the company holding the keys. He did the math and left.
The same math applies from your side of the counter. If the risk of holding your bitcoin is too much for the exchange, it was always too much for you to leave there.
