In 1936, Lluís Companys, the president of Catalonia, was reinstated after the Republican victory in the Spanish Civil War. He continued to lead the Catalan government during the Civil War, coordinating anti-fascist militias and supporting economic collectivizations under anarchist influence. Companys was a key figure in the Republican faction, and his leadership was crucial in maintaining the unity of the coalition of parties in Barcelona. 

However, his efforts were complicated by factional violence among leftist groups and the threat of Soviet influence. Despite these challenges, Companys remained a significant figure in the fight against fascism and the preservation of Catalan autonomy
