There are at least 700 psychedelic churches in the U.S., experts estimate, and their congregants aren't in it just for fun. Rolling Stone contributor Claire Hoffman spent months with Americans trading pews for psilocybin, ayahuasca and ibogaine in search of God. Of the three dozen or so people she interviewed, "not a single one said they were taking these drugs to have a good time."
Her reporting runs from a $5,000-a-week Costa Rica retreat touting a "miracle rate" of more than 98 percent to the church of the Zide Door, which Forbes estimated in 2024 brings in about $5 million a year selling mushroom "sacraments."
