RIP a progressive

Pat Oliphant, “the dean of political cartoonists,” died on Monday at the age of 90. Robert McFadden wrote The New York Times obituary for the Australian-born Oliphant, a largely self-taught artist who “moved to the United States as a young man, quickly won a Pulitzer Prize (which he disdained), and became one of the nation’s best-known political cartoonists, syndicated in as many as 500 American and foreign newspapers. He was showered with awards, and his work was featured in magazines and galleries and collected in books and museums.”

D. D. Degg of The Daily Cartoonist has a round-up of tributes and a few highlights from Oliphant’s work, including his 1967 Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoon in The Denver Post
