Cotton prices were very high so cotton was profitable, someone had to supply all those cloth mills in Manchester from outside England, since cotton didn't grow in England. English behavior during the Civil War was determined by the fact that they needed southern US cotton plantations to supply their mills.

Only wipe North America off the map and you will get anarchy, the complete decay of trade and modern civilisation. But to do away with slavery would be to wipe America off the map. . ."

A general prohibition of child labor is incompatible with the existence of large-scale industry and hence an empty, pious wish. Its realization -- if it were possible -- would be reactionary
