Death of a Shite republic

Israel controls the skies over Tehran, President Trump is considering an attack, and Iran’s international isolation is as pronounced. Notional allies Russia, China and North Korea offer little in the way of meaningful help, and despite being the largest state sponsor of terrorism, Iran’s days of trying to dominate the Middle East are over. Forget rushing to develop nuclear weapons – the regime’s survival is now the issue

The riots that enveloped the country almost three years ago after the death of Mahsa Amini (who had been arrested for improperly wearing a hijab) followed more than a decade of unrest that focused on economic hardship. Things have only got worse since then, with water shortages and power blackouts due to mismanagement, soaring inflation – over 45 per cent according to the IMF, but more likely much higher – and chronic underemployment.

Attacks on oil and gas infrastructure will directly lead to fuel shortages for all Iranians and deprive the country of oil export revenue. This will get much worse if the electricity system is targeted. Basic services like water, sewage, finance and telecommunications will be impacted.

For 46 years, Western analysts have got it wrong when it came to predicting the regime’s end. This time, however, it could be different.

Reports of regime insiders packing their bags for Moscow, like former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, may be part of Israel’s psychological campaign, but cannot be discounted. President Trump’s demand for “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER”, backed up with a call for Tehranis to evacuate the city, is the clearest sign yet that negotiation is the only way the bombing ends.

That means Iran giving up its nuclear ambitions and ballistic missile capabilities.

So then on to KOREA - give war a chance
