Lowest common denominator

“It’s pretty clear what a main purpose for Grok now is,” says Adrian Weckler of The Irish Independent.

Cecilia D'Anastasio of Bloomberg News reports Musk’s Grok AI generated thousands of undressed images per hour on X: “During a 24-hour analysis of images the @Grok account posted to X, the chatbot generated about 6,700 every hour that were identified as sexually suggestive or nudifying, according to Genevieve Oh, a social media and deepfake researcher … Oh calculated that 85% of Grok’s images, overall, are sexualized.”

Bloomberg’s Max Chafkin thinks “the weirdest part is the extremely loud insistence that grok, etc are bringing alien super intelligence or whatever when they're actually doing basically lowest common denominator content farming.”

The Cut’s E.J. Dickson spoke with several of the women who were undressed by the AI image generator, including Musk’s ex Ashley St. Clair. “I’ve been sexually assaulted in the past, and it almost felt like a digital version of that,” one of the women told Dickson, who notes, “Some of these images seemingly depict minors — and X is doing nothing about it.”

Paul Sandle and Louise Rasmussen of Reuters report the European Commission

on Monday said that the images being shared across X were unlawful and appalling. The EC joins “a growing chorus of officials across the world who have condemned the surge in nonconsensual imagery on the platform.”

But while officials in France, Britain and India are demanding answers, “the U.S. federal government, which is led by Musk ally Donald Trump, has yet to address the issue,” Reuters reports
