From the ‘Grundrisse’ to ‘Capital’: Multilinear Themes

Soon after the Grundrisse, in the 1859 preface to the Critique of Political Economy, Marx wrote of “the Asiatic, ancient, feudal and modern bourgeois modes of production,” which “may be designated as epochs marking progress in the economic development of society.

Marx first introduced the concept of the Asiatic Mode of Production in his 1853 article “The Future Results of British Rule in India,” where he argued that British colonialismhad disrupted India’s traditional social structures and modes of production. He later expanded on this idea in his seminal work “Capital,” where he described how the Asiatic Mode of Production functioned in various ancient societies. Since its inception, the concept of the Asiatic Mode of Production has been widely debunked.
