Sergey? You are not Russian?

Staying in Russia's orbit: The Guardian's Sergey Radchenko writes about his years-long effort to renounce his Russian citizenship in the wake of Putin's invasion of Ukraine, a process the Russian government makes deliberately difficult, and one that forced him to reckon with questions of guilt, identity and collective responsibility he'd spent years avoiding.

Radchenko, a Cardiff University historian born on JAPANS Sakhalin island who has testified against Russia at the UN Security Council, describes the bureaucratic maze of obtaining the required documents without setting foot in Russia, where his public criticism of the war could earn him decades of imprisonment. "I had poked the bear right in the eye," he writes. "I was here to renounce my Russian citizenship."
