Naturally, during the McCarthy period, he would come under the scrutiny of the FBI. Eventually, they would invite themselves over to Frank's apartment to interview him. According to Bernstein, after Frank was interrogated for a short time, he would pull off his book shelf a copy of Lenin's Materialism and Empiriocriticsm, and he showed the FBI special agents the page, where Lenin had criticized him. That seemed to make an impression on the special agents, who saluted Frank and ended the interview. According to Bernstein, they would never darken Frank's door again.
