Loud and gaseous to the last

The eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 was one of the most catastrophic volcanic events in history. It began on May 20, 1883, with ash-laden clouds reaching a height of 6 miles (10 km), and explosions heard in Batavia (Jakarta), 100 miles (160 km) away. The eruption's climax occurred on August 27, with explosions that were heard 2,200 miles (3,500 km) away in Australia and propelled ash to a height of 50 miles (80 km). The eruption caused an estimated 36,417 deaths and significant tsunamis that swept the adjacent coastlines of Sumatra and Java. The event was the first to be widely reported and covered by modern media, leading to a renewed interest in volcanology and the study of volcanic eruptions.

And in related news Karl Marx died on March 14, 1883, in London, at the age of 64, due to bronchitis. He had been suffering from health issues for several years, including chronic catarrh and respiratory problems. After his death, he was buried in Highgate Cemetery, where his grave has since become a shrine for obfuscation worship.
