Legalizing assault produces a police force. Legalizing murder produces an army.
The Armed Forces of El Salvador (Fuerza Armada de El Salvador) consist of three main branches: the Salvadoran Army, the Salvadoran Air Force, and the Navy of El Salvador. They have gained international recognition for their efforts in combating organized crime and have participated in various missions, including deployments with the United Nations. The military has been involved in regional cooperation and has a presence in international missions, such as a helicopter unit in Mali since 2015. As of 2025, the military strength and capabilities of El Salvador continue to evolve, reflecting its commitment to state sovereignty and security.
The National Civil Police of El Salvador (PNC) is the national civilian police force responsible for maintaining order, safety, and public tranquility across the country. Established after the Peace Accords in 1992, the PNC replaced the National Police and has since been a key component of the civilian force. The PNC is divided into branches such as military police, civil police, and municipal guard, each playing a vital role in combating crime and violence.
The force has seen a significant reduction in homicides, from 52% down from 2015, and has the lowest murder rate in Latin America in 2023. Despite these improvements, the police face challenges such as police misconduct, including maltreatment and disproportionate use of force. The PNC's efforts are supported by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, which oversees its operations and ensures compliance with international standards.
