The true interests of Freud’s youth, in Crews’s account, were literary (he had aspirations to be a novelist or a poet) and philosophical (the hero of his teens was the philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach). ‘By 1841,’ Crews writes, ‘Feuerbach had already developed the thesis Freud would elaborate in The Future of an Illusion (1927): that the God posited by Jewish and Christian theology is nothing other than a projection of human needs and fears.’
