27 Oct 2025 · Semite is an obsolete term, popularized in the 19th century, that originally described someone who speaks a Semitic language, a family of languages that includes Arabic, Hebrew, and others. It was later used in an ethnic sense.
Jews had “white status” within the apartheid racial scheme, they faced social exclusion from English-speaking South Africans and, at times, vicious antisemitism from the Afrikaners.
